Foundation In 1844, Henry Lehman, the son of a cattle merchant, emigrated to America from Bavaria, Germany and settled in Montgomery, Alabama, opening a business. In 1847, after the arrival of Emanuel Lehman , the firm became “H. Lehman and Son” and the arrival of his younger brother, Mayer Lehman, in 1850, the company became known as “Lehman Brothers”. Taking advantage of the high value of the cotton market, the firm began to accept as payment amounts of raw cotton, which established a treated cotton business, growing to become one of the largest in Alabama. When the business of marketing of cotton moved to New York, Lehman Brothers also changed location in 1858.
